IVSA

The IVSA (International Veterinary Students’ Association) was founded in 1951. Their mission statement is 'To benefit the animals and people of the world' which they achieve by harnessing the potential and dedication of veterinary students to promote the international application of veterinary skills, education and knowledge.

IVSA aims to:

  1. Encourage veterinary students to use their knowledge and abilities for the benefit of both animals and humans

  2. Raise the overall standard of veterinary education worldwide

  3. Actively support measures to improve the standard of animal welfare worldwide

  4. Encourage cooperation between members veterinary student associations and international organisations

They arrange annual meetings (congresses and symposia), run permanent projects, facilitate student exchanges, publish a quarterly newsletter, and administer a scholarship fund to assist students in undertaking EMS or research abroad. 

IVSA UK and Ireland

IVSA UK and Ireland is the local chapter of the IVSA for students at the veterinary faculties in the UK and Ireland, and is now a subcommittee of AVS. Hence, every member of AVS is automatically also a member of IVSA UK and Ireland. For more information, contact your AVS representative. Each veterinary school also has their own IVSA Exchange reps, get in touch with them to find out more about IVSA exchange opportunities at your University. These can include helping students organise EMS overseas.

 

British Veterinary Association (BVA)

The BVA is the national representative body for the UK veterinary profession. The BVA guides members throughout their careers, from student to retirement, with the support and knowledge they need to achieve their goals, and to speak up for them on the issues that matter most.

Prospective and current veterinary students may find the 'student centre' section of their website particularly useful.

 

Vetlife

Previously the Veterinary Benevolent Fund (BVF), Vetlife offers a vital source of information and help for the veterinary community. An essential helpline, mental wellbeing support and financial assistance for all members of the Veterinary Profession.

British Veterinary Zoological Society (BVZS)

The BVZS runs bi-annual meetings, details of which can be found on their website. Veterinary students can attend the meetings at a concessionary rate, and are able to act as stewards. There is also the opportunity at meetings for networking with individuals and organisations that may be able to provide students with EMS placements.

 

Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF)

Founded in 1983, AWF works to improve the welfare of animals. It funds research, supports veterinary education, provides pet care advice and encourages debate on animal welfare issues. In conjunction with AVS, the AWF has arranged many animal welfare talks at the UK and Ireland veterinary schools, discussing issues ranging from TB control to the ethics surrounding cat cafés.

 

British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA)

The BSAVA was founded in 1957 as a professional body to serve veterinary Surgeons who treat companion animals and now has over 8,500 members. The majority of their members work in practice as veterinary surgeons or veterinary nurses.

 

British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA)

The BCVA is the cattle specialist division of the BVA. The main activities of the association centre around providing around 1300 members with information and education on relevant issues. The BCVA Congress is held in the autumn and training courses are run throughout the year at various locations.

 

British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA)

BEVA is committed to serve and lead the equine veterinary profession in the championing of high standards of equine health and welfare and the promotion of scientific excellence and education throughout the world.

BEVA is a world leading equine veterinary association with over 2,400 members globally. BEVA is a highly regarded authority representing the industry at the highest level, running outstanding CPD and producing universally respected journals.

Vets: Stay, Go, Diversify (VSGD)

Vets: Stay, Go Diversify (VSGD) is an international community of veterinary professionals who support each other in pursuing fulfilling careers.

Their mission is to help you connect with like-minded people and provide support on your journey to a successful career. Come and be inspired with the world of opportunities that are open to you within the clinic, in new ventures, or beyond the profession.

 

Veterinary Defence Society Training (VDS Training)

VDS Training offers a range of courses for all employees of veterinary practices, from nurses and receptionists to practice managers, assistants and experienced practitioners.

They also organise events designed specifically for undergraduates and recently qualified vets, including graduate reunion seminars at the eight UK veterinary schools. Some of these courses are provided by The Veterinary Defence Society Limited.
